We are in Chengdu for the 2020 World Nature Day

Time: 2020-10-24 Author: Karen

October 24 is the first Nature Day proposed by China Nature Education Network. On this day, there are over 100 organizations invited people to walk out of our family house and get into nature to celebrate, enjoy nature, embrace nature and link ourselves with nature. As one of the participating organizations, ApandaTour invited 10 families from Chengdu to Nanguatan to observe and protect the migrating birds, linking ourselves with nature for this special day.

It is almost the first time for all the participating families to know about bird-watching. With goodwill to link ourselves with nature, all the families carefully searched for and observed the migrating and resident birds in Nanguatan. In a short period of half a day, we observed16 different birds including common sandpipers with the "curved moon", white wagtail constantly wagging its tail, red-billed starlings flying in a flock, crested grebes which can dive into the water for a long time. The parents and children are amazed by the beautiful birds living under the same sky as us. They observed while taking notes seriously, murmuring the names of birds they just got to know.

Maybe they truly felt the beauty of nature, the descriptions coming from them became poetic and philosophic. When a five-year-old girl told me after she had observed the eye and wing pattern of a common sandpiper, she said "the eye look like a pearl, and the wings are like ocean curve…" At that moment, I was astonished by her language and description, and I was equally astonished by the unlimited world opened in her feeling and imagination through nature observation. One parent wrote "It seems to me that I have never observed the living creatures around us so closely. When we focus our eye on some small things, we will see a much bigger world."

The key theme of this activity is to pay attention to the relationship between migrating birds and human beings. After our interesting nature games, all the adult and children participants realized the difficulties experienced by the migrant birds. We followed the observation with a "natural forum" on which the participants spoke for the migrant birds and discussed what we need to do for the migrant birds. From the ideas of participants, "building more nature reserves, never hunting birds, never eating wildlife, no littering, the potential harms to birds from glass walls of sky-crappers..." We could feel the budding empathy toward birds and nature from our participants. Finally, we made our Migrant Birds Protection Agreement, which we will abide by and we would also tell our friends to follow.

Nature Day activity is not just a chance for us to link ourselves with nature, it is more like a bugle call and an invitation. We thank all those people who have accepted our invitation, and those who are considering linking with us in nature. We hope you can send invitations to more people. We have more people stand together to speak for nature. We are looking forward to meeting you in nature in our next activity.
